PCB's response to BCB's press release

Lahore January 18, 2013: Commenting on a media release issued by Bangladesh Cricket Board on January 18, 2013, spokesman of Pakistan Cricket Board said, “In order to put the record straight, it is sated that PCB received no request from Bangladesh Cricket Board regarding release of its players for the auction of BPL.

“It should also be noted that the tour of Bangladesh to Pakistan in April 2008 was an FTP commitment and in no way a favor to PCB. It is pertinent to mention here that just before that tour, Zimbabwe and South Africa also visited Pakistan in the same period.

“As far as the first edition of BPL (2012) is concerned, the PCB cooperated with the BCB after then President BCB Mostafa Kamal made long-term commitments and understandings and requested the PCB to support their league. The release of the players on part of PCB was intended to make the inaugural tournament of the BCB a success.

“The PCB values its friendship with the BCB and has always supported the Bangladesh cricket in many ways. However it expects the BCB to reciprocate this support. The PCB respects the people of Bangladesh and wishes well for the development of cricket in their country.

Pakistani cricketers unlikely to feature in BPL

LAHORE: The chances of Pakistani cricketers’ participation in the Bangladesh league seem to have dimmed as the Bangladesh national cricket team is unlikely to tour Pakistan.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had made it clear to its Bangladesh counterpart that Pakistani crickets may not be released for the league if Bangladesh’s national cricket team does not tour Pakistan as committed by them earlier.

Now just one day is left in the league to start for which 51 Pakistani cricketers have signed the contract.

“We have no report from Bangladesh about their plan to tour Pakistan before the start of the league and we have not yet taken any decision whether to release the players for the league or not,” a spokesman for the PCB told Dawn.

“Yes, the time is running short but I am not in a position to give any comment on the prevailing situation,” he said.

The BCB on last Saturday decided to send a security team to Pakistan and sought three more days from the PCB in confirming its tour, but on Tuesday there is no development.

The Bangladesh cricket team was to tour Pakistan in April for a short three-day tour to play just one T20 and one ODI.

But later lack of coordination between the PCB and the government of Punjab prompted some Bangladeshi citizens to file a petition in the Dhaka High Court, raising objections over the tour as a result of which the court ordered the BCB to defer the tour.

The PCB, which has desperately been making efforts to organise a successful tour of any foreign team in Pakistan, wrote a letter to the BCB warning it about non-participation of Pakistani players but the move seems to have failed as Bangladesh did not give any response.

Though some cricket experts of Pakistan were of the view that Pakistan cricketers should be allowed to play in the league, the PCB turned a deaf ear to their demand.

The cricketers, who will suffer financial losses, also pressurised the PCB through some cricket experts to get the NOCs, but it all went in vain.

Karachi - Pakistan player of the year Mohammad Hafeez wants his cricket board to schedule more Test matches for the national team.

Pakistan are restricted after rival teams refused to tour the country following a gun attack on the Sri Lanka squad in 2009 but the national Twenty20 captain still believes more tests are possible.

“I would ask the board to take up this issue and try to schedule more Test matches for us because I believe players only develop by playing Test matches,” Hafeez told reporters on Monday.

“It is unfortunate we get less test matches. Last year we played three tests in January and than three in June-July. Now we are going to South Africa. We will be playing tests after a gap of nearly six months which is hard on us.”

Pakistan whitewashed England in three Tests in January and February last year in their temporary home of the United Arab Emirates but lost in Sri Lanka in July and visit South Africa for three Tests next month.

Ajmal sweeps PCB's inaugural awards

LAHORE: Off-spinner Saeed Ajmal won all the bowling honours at Pakistan's inaugural cricket awards ceremony, after he was controversially left off the International Cricket Council's awards list.

Despite bagging 72 wickets in 12 Tests from August 2011 to August 2012, the 35-year-old was not included in any of the ICC shortlists when they were announced in September, sparking outrage in Pakistan at the perceived injustice.

Pakistan's protest over the omission went unheeded, but at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) awards Saturday night Ajmal was declared best Pakistan bowler for 2012 in all three formats -- Test, one-day and T20.

Ajmal, who helped Pakistan rout then world number one Test side England 3-0 in the United Arab Emirates early last year, also won the PCB's special prize for best bowler of the year.

"To be named the best for the year from such a special group, for me this is an out of this world feeling," he said.

Ajmal took 39 wickets in six Tests last year while his tally stood at 31 in 17 one day matches and 25 in 16 Twenty20s.

All-rounder Mohammad Hafeez, captain of Pakistan's Twenty20 team, was named player of the year.

Hafeez was prolific in all three forms of the game last year -- both as batsman and bowler -- with 505 runs and eight wickets in Tests, 476 runs and 13 wickets in one-dayers, and 398 runs and 10 wickets in T20s.

Nasir Jamshed was named batsman of the year in both ODIs and T20s, while the prize for the Test batsman of the year went to Azhar Ali, who scored 551 runs.

Left-arm paceman Junaid Khan was named the emerging player of the year.

The awards, which each carried a cash prize of 200,000 rupees ($2,100) and a trophy, were decided by a jury comprising of former Test captain Intikhab Alam, Pakistan's chief selector Iqbal Qasim and veteran journalist Qamar Ahmed.

PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf said the awards were intended to motivate the
players.

"The award ceremony is a new initiative of the PCB meant to recognise, acknowledge and honour Pakistan's cricketing talent that has consistently stood out on the field of play -- winning laurels for the team and the nation," said Ashraf.

Amir hopes for return to international cricket

LAHORE: Banned Pakistan speedster Mohammad Amir is hoping for a return to international cricket but admits he hasn’t forgotten the infamous spot-fixing scandal which led to his ouster.

“I haven’t forgotten that but I want to learn from that so as to avoid any such incident in future,” Amir told reporters at the Punjab Stadium where he was attending a sports festival of a private college as chief guest.

Amir was convicted along with captain Salman Butt, fellow fast bowler Mohammed Asif and agent Mazhar Majeed of a plot to bowl pre-determined no-balls against England at the Lord’s in August 2010 and is serving a five-year ICC ban for his role in the scandal.

Amir denied that he was in any contact with the ICC to get his suspension waived off citing it was “his personal matter” but admitted he “is missing cricket”.

Nevertheless, he hailed the performance of Junaid Khan and Mohammad Irfan on Pakistan’s recently-concluded tour of India.

“They bowled well in a high pressure series against India but in order to maintain their performances they have to consistently work hard,” he said.

Nasir forgets man of the series trophy

Pakistani batsman Nasir Jamshed was dejected at the Delhi airport when he found that he had forgotten his man of the series trophy at his hotel room.

Nasir was seen in panic and discomfort at the airport, however, local liaison officer assured him that his man of the series trophy will be sent via post shortly.

Earlier, it was also revealed that Nasir's lucky bat was broken after the second ODI in Kolkata and he played with a new bat in Delhi.

Nasir had earlier scored two back to back centuries with his lucky bat.

As the Pakistan team touched down on India on Saturday, there was some bad news awaiting them. They will not be part of the auction for the sixth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The auction is tentatively slated for February 3.

Reliable sources in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and IPL franchises have revealed to this paper that the players from across the border will not be part of the cash-rich tournament, the sixth edition of which is scheduled to be held in April-May next year.
At an IPL workshop conducted in Jodhpur over the last two days, the franchisees have been told categorically that no cricketer from Pakistan will be part of the auction. In fact, they have been given a list of the players who will feature in the auction. It contains rejects of the past auctions and those released by the franchises in October. The Pakistanis are not part of the list.
IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla and chief operating officer Sundar Raman were among the officials who conducted the workshop.

Said a franchise official, “We were always given to understand that Pakistan players will not be part of the auction. There was never an occasion when any of the franchises had any notion that they will be in the auction pool. Also, there are not too many vacant slots among the franchises. Neither are they left with too much fund to buy a high-profile Pakistani player. We don’t expect the IPL 6 auction to be too big anyway.”
The list submitted to the teams is, of course, not final. The IPL authorities have told the teams that there could be an updated list in the first week of January. Not that the franchisees are expecting too many changes. Each team is allowed a pool of 33 players, out of which 11 can be overseas cricketers.
Now that the cricketing ties between the traditional rivals have been somewhat normalised, with India agreeing to host them in a short series, there has been intense speculation over the likely presence of Pakistan in the T20 summer extravaganza. However, the IPL authorities do not seem to think so.

Pakistan team arrives
The Pakistan Twenty20 squad led by Mohammed Hafeez on Saturday reached Bangalore, where they will be playing the first of the two T20s on December 25. The PIA flight first arrived in New Delhi late in the afternoon and the squad was received by senior officials of the Pakistan High Commission and BCCI officials. They later took a connecting flight from the Capital to Bangalore. “We were received by the officials of Pakistan High Commission as well as BCCI chief administrative officer Ratnakar Shetty. The players got a warm welcome and were presented with lovely bouquets,” PCB GM (Media Affairs) Nadeem Sarwar, who is accompanying the squad, said.
